Augmented Reality for Education Program Development

AR interactively promotes learning efficiency

British neuromarketing and analysis company Neuro-Insight research: Human brains show 72% better memory with AR experiences.

Why need this technology

Neuro-Insight research indicates that AR users show stronger abilities in terms of learning involvement, left and right brain’s memory and attention, as well as emotional response intensity than non-AR users.  Thus, Hong Kong’s education model must keep abreast of the trend. Augmented Reality (AR)is a brand-new technology that combines virtual images with reality, allowing users to interact with virtual images. With the rapid development of Cloud Computing and 5G technology, augmented reality has begun to be applied in education. Comparing with text and 2D image, AR can increase students’ interest in learning and deliver abstract concepts in a more efficient way. Interactive AR education can better draw students’ attention and make learning full of fun.

Pain Points We Solved

Students learn in a passive way under current Hong Kong education model which teachers teach in one way communication, leading to low attention and disinterest in learning.

In addition, human brain can only memorize 10% and 20% of content through reading and listening but 90% through imitation. So, using AR in education not only can enrich the learning content but also increase students’ interest in learning and stimulate their thinking, resulting in better learning outcome.

AR education model has great potential in creating different learning modules for current and future students.

Programme Highlights

This Augmented Reality (AR)For Education Program mainly trains Hong Kong educators on how to use AR to create interactive learning materials by explaining the theory of AR, introducing the software used in AR, describing the role of 5G network and elaborating the ways to meet different educational needs. In this program, trainees learn how to integrate AR technology into traditional teaching materials so that they can simulate the lab experiment, demonstrate continental movements and geographical phenomenon and produce 3D insects model etc.

This program contains 2 modules with both theory and practice from entry to advanced level.  There are in class exercises with technical support to ensure trainees can master the AR skills and knowledge!

Curriculum

Module 1: Augmented Reality Technology

Learning hours: 2 lessons, 6 hours in total

This module is an introductory program of AR. Students will learn the background of AR and its advantage on STEM and teaching. Instructor will demonstrate how to use AR tools so that students can apply and operate simple AR on teaching.

Module content:
•Definition and technical theory of AR, VR, MR
•The application and advantages of augmented reality (AR) in STEM and teaching
•AR equipment and demonstration
•How does 5G network enable users to have a better AR experience
•Software for making AR and corresponding file formats
•Simple AR platform operation

Module 2: Create Interactive AR Teaching Material

Learning hours: 2 lessons, 6 hours in total

Instructor will share real life cases to students, teaching them how to select the right learning content for AR application and handle 3D objects folders. Students will then be given exercises to practise the production of AR learning materials, aiming to virtualize abstract idea and increase audience interest.

Module content:
•How to select the right learning content for AR application
•How to handle 3D object folders
• AR Marker
• Augmented Reality
•Interact with augmented reality objects, such as playing videos, animations, etc.
•Real life cases sharing and display
• AR Development Platform
• Practice: Producing AR teaching materials that can enhance students’ learning interest and understand abstract ideas in a easier way.

Outcomes

3D Objects on Textbook

Students learn to place a 3D objects on textbook

AR Marker

Students are able to make AR Marker

” I have been working in educational industry for 8 years and was the head of two subject departments. I was very satisfied in joining this program and it helped me a lot in my teaching! My students obviously showed more interest in learning and their questions significantly increased. One P.3 student even asked for more AR after lesson as I learnt to adopt AR technology in my teaching materials. I displayed 3D insect models living in wild habitat in classroom and students just couldn’t keep their eyes off the model!””

Head of General Studies for Primary School on Hong Kong Island

Our Instructors

Our instructor has been working in IT industry for many years who is proficient in AR and carries a wealth of coaching experience. Our instructor shares in-depth insights about the development of AR technology, application of STEM and production of AR teaching materials and conducts lots of on-going researches about the latest AR trend. In addition, he complies the program content to cater for the demands from educational and relevant industries. Together with in class exercises, students can master the AR tools quickly, allowing them to achieve better teaching outcome and learning experience. Apart from teaching the latest AR technology, instructor will also share real life cases so that students can learn from other successful AR cases.

A real case of a local middle school teacher: AR interactively promotes learning efficiency, and the student pass rate increases by 50%

The course student is a geography teacher in a middle school in Kowloon. He has six years of experience in teaching geography. In the past, he has always used the designated textbooks of the Education and Manpower Bureau to teach the classroom. However, the results of the geography students have not been satisfactory, and the average scores of the geography students are mostly at the pass level. , There is still a lot of room for improvement.

After enrolling in this augmented reality interactive textbook course, the teacher used the results of the course and the interactive textbook example introduced by the instructor in the course: using AR technology to explain to students the processes of crustal movement, earthquakes and orogenic movements. The teacher applied to his geography teaching and expressed that he was very satisfied with the ability of AR technology to connect with his geography textbooks, which greatly improved learning motivation and willingness to learn, and the student pass rate exceeded the previous semester.

FAQs

Is the application of AR technology common in Hong Kong’s education sector?

The application of AR technology in the education sector is also becoming more popular. For example, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) uses AR applications: students in engineering disciplines can use AR applications in tablet computers to understand complex machine structures and assembly and disassembly procedures; IT disciplines also Using AR technology, the course materials, videos, student works and three-dimensional models are combined with the printed booklet into one, so that the flat booklet can be transformed into a solid and interactive publication.

What is the difference between AR and VR?

AR technology superimposes virtual information onto the real world, making Virtual objects and real scenes exist at the same time and in the same space, And VR is a technology that replaces the real world, using virtual screens to occupy all the vision, making people feel like they are in reality, which is an immersive experience.

What is the qualifications of the instructor?

Our tutors are well-equipped with academic qualifications and industry work experience. In addition to his rich teaching experience, he also works in large online platforms or advertising companies.
